Why is my Flatiron is MAKING my hair dry and brittle?

I have short black woman hair. It’s just passed my earlobes. Well, when I get it professionally done—the texture is SLEEK, Shiny and full of body with the ‘shake’ effect. But after one wash or a little too much oil—my hair goes limp and starts breaking off BADLY. I switched my flat irons from Conair to Andis—-and now the Andis (which I heard was the BEST) is breaking my hair off worst then the Conair. I’ve adjusted the temperature, oiled my hair and done it with my hair freshly blown-dried—but the straightness won’t stay. I am afraid that I am severely damaging my hair and am trying to GROW it long. Any suggestions from women with SIMILAR hair types and textures? I had a jet black rinse months ago, but since haven’t colored it. How often should I wash it, trim it, deep condition it? Should I blow dry or dryer dry? Or should I just pay $55-80 to have it done professionally? My hair is not oily, but it’s not dry. It’s a medium texture…not extremely coarse or thin..HELP PLEASE?

I don’t have your hair type/texture. However, I am multi-racial and have very curly, thick frizzy hair. I had many problems with split ends and dryness so here’s a few tips, K?

You should definitely deep condition your hair at least once a week. I’m talking about a thick, penetrating deep conditioner with a shower cap and added heat to penetrate your strands. The second thing is…has your hair always been hard to grow or just recently because of your health or changes in your body? If so, I would advise you to take care of yourself and get the extra vitamins that you need. Take a look at these! http://www.amazon.com/Fast-Grow-black-growth-vitamins/dp/B0002VJIH8
They have pretty good reviews and basically, they include lots of vitamins that are supposedly good for healthy hair growth…

Andis…. and Conair are both low end stying tools. Please if you care about your hair, don’t use those tools. You’ll want to look for a 1 inch ceramic tool such as Chi, Sedu or otherwise. Please look here for your type of the line flat irons (http://www.folica.com/appliances/straightener.htm?s_cid=gg_kwd6468&gclid=CKuemo3TvJICFQIjxwodczc3cg)
Although Kenta is listed, don’t use that one b/c it is not ceramic.

After washing your hair, make sure that you use a leave in conditioner, oil your scalp and ends and put a heat-protective cream in your hair to prevent damage when you use your flat iron. If you’re not a in rush, let your hair naturally dry and then use the flat iron and seperate your hair in thin strands while using the flat iron. If you use very high heat settings on your flat iron, use a slow, even, smooth stroke when you are using the flatiron and try not to keep going over the hair multiple times when you are straightening it. If you must use a blow dryer, make sure you only use it to get most of the moisture out of your hair like (50-70)% and then let it air dry the rest of the way… may seem like a lot but just get into the habit of doing your hair on say an evening when you aren’t planning anything so you can take more time to care for your hair instead of rushing and using too many hot tools too often throughout the week.

Make sure you have a satin pillow case at night when you sleep and if you’re hair is shorter and you’d like to keep it straight, consider wrapping your hair with a satin wrap at night. Use a oil sheen spray about twice a week to keep it looking shiny like when you leave your salon.

As far as coloring/rinsing… at least it’s not permanent but even rinses leave your hair VERY dry. Make sure to condition after each process like that.

Hope this helps. Take care.
