Anyone know a sure-fire way to seal the valves of an air-mattress to prevent the gradual escape of air?
The particular item I am inflating is designed with plastic accouterments. Once the mattress is filled, with valves tightly closed, it is possible to hear and feel air gradually escaping from the exhaust, about a 3/4 ” opening with a bottle-top cap for closure.
The mattress affords a comfortable support during a single night, but on rising, one observes that the apparatus has been slowly deflating. Is this universal, or is there a sealant which would prevent the inconvenience?
Presently I am trying a piece of duck tape over the recess containing the exhaust. For an indoor situation it may be helpful, but when the mattress is used in water as a float, the tape will likely detach. On the other hand, there may be waterproof tapes.
It is possible that similar mattresses equipped with metal appurtenances would, of themselves, overcome the problem.
Do any of our readers have a solution allowing better use of the merchandise I already have?
Grease the threads of the exhaust with vasoline. The air wont be able to escape between the threads with a good amount of vasoline or any other kind of grease, vasoline is probably the safest grease to use on there. You can also wrap the threads with Teflon tape, found in the plumbing aisle of the hardware store. Prevents threaded pipes from leaking water…good enough for an air mattress
