Can an ultrasound positively identify a cyst versus a tumor?
As a cyst is usually a liquid-filled mass while a tumor is a solid core, is it possible to definitively identify between these two objects in an ultrasound? I’d like some empirical answers, but no web links please (I think I’ve read every journal entry that isn’t in JStor already!)
Just some professional advice please; I’ve got an Ovarian Mass (no Catholic Easter Egg jokes please) and tomorrow’s U/S might involve a trans-vaginal. I just want to know how much data to expect tomorrow. Once again, thanks in advance.
If your US is performed by a tech, legally, they cannot tell you there findings, as they are not licensed to do so…you will get the results in a few days once read by an MD. If you go to an ob/gyn, he will most likely discuss the findings with you after the exam. Yes, it is possible to differentiate between a solid mass and a fluid filled mass on US, they will also be able to tell size and perhaps type of cyst. The echogenicity will show if mass is hollow (cyst) or solid (tumor). They may also find that you have hyperechoic foci within the mass which may indicate a hemorrhagic cyst (meaning red blood cells within cyst). Good luck on your US, and keep in mind that the great majority of ovarian masses are cysts, so try not to worry to much.

is anyone out there a professional sonographer?
i am having a baby in 3 weeks and my ultrasound tech says im having a boy but everyone who sees it says it looks like a girl. unfortunately i wont be having another ultrasound before i deliver and i have spent a ton of money on boy stuff. i really need someone to help…thank you… http://i70.photobucket.com/albums/i116/ashleybr616/hayden.jpg
When you say “everyone” says it looks like a girl, are they ultrasound techs? If not, then I’d stop worrying. It’s possible the tech is wrong, but you can return the stuff. And the stuff you can’t return, just use. Your baby won’t care if the mobile has airplanes on it. There’s just 3 weeks left — concentrate on this incredible event! It’s the best! Good luck to you.
