What are rocks and stones made from?
We have so many different types of rocks and stones, where do they come from and how are they formed?
Rocks are composed of minerals. Rocks can vary in compositions considerably, but they all contain specific minerals and minerals have set compositions. For example well use a rock most people are familiar with, Limestone. Limestone is a rock with a large amount of the mineral Calcite.
Each mineral is composed of specific ranges of elements. Calcite from above is composed of the elements Calcium, Carbon, and Oxygen to have the overall chemical equation CaCO3.
Many things people colloquially refer to as rocks are in fact minerals. Quartz for example will always have a composition of SiO2 and it is a mineral not a rock.
Rock are formed in different ways, they can be metamorphic, igneous, sedimentary, or hydrothermal.
An igneous rock is formed when other rocks are melted into a magma which then solidifies to form new rocks. Igneous also refers to lava that cools after erupting from a volcano. Rocks formed from sediments, or broken pieces of rock are sedimentary, this happens in several ways such as sand dunes being compacted to form sandstone. Metamorphic rocks are rocks changed from increasing temperature and pressure well beneath the earth’s surface. Hydrothermal rocks (minerals really) form when a system of hot water evaporates boils or cools enough to release minerals out of solution to form often times spectacular and beautiful crystals.
