Why do higher temperature rocks melt last?
Taking a geology class and it says high temperature rocks and minerals will melt last. And cooler rocks (lower temperature) will melt first. Why is that? Seems counter intuitive. If a rock is hotter, shouldn’t it melt first?
Or, is it because hotter rocks have a higher melting temperature?
You answered your own question. It is because hotter rocks have a higher melting temperature.
Or rather, as magma cools down, high temperature rocks will form first, the rest remaining liquid.
As the temperature drops, lower temperature rocks will form, until eventually the whole melt is solidified.

How long and hot do you warm rocks up?
I need to warm some rocks up in the oven but I am not sure on how long or what temp. (I need the rocks for some outdoor kitties to help them stay warm during the night when it gets down to ~5 degrees). How hot should I have the oven and for how long should I keep them in there? (the rocks will be about the size of an apple / fist size)
I don’t know for sure, but I would heat them up for an hour on 350 before setting them outside. The cats will wait for them to cool to the right temp before snuggling them. Double your oven use – bake potatoes at the same time as you are heating the rocks!
