Hi….I’ve been raising and showing rabbits for 10 years. You said you got him off of her, did he grunt and fall over before that? I would say that with you geting him off of her quickly and that I’m assuming this would be her first litter that there is a very small chance that she is pregnant. If she’s older than a year old that lowers the chances even more. Palpating is how you can tell if she’s pregnant, but it is pretty difficult and takes practice. So it’d be best to just go ahead and treat the situation as if she is pregnant. A rabbit’s gestation period (length of time she is pregnant) is 28-32 days, so a couple days before she is due she’ll need a nest box. The kind that I find to be the best are at Tractor Supply and are metal with a removable wood floor (for cleaning), if there’s not a TSC around you then you can try a feed mill or go to the American Rabbit Breeders Association website, then to links and look up some suppliers websites. But then when you put the nest box in with her, cover the bottom of the box with about 2 inches of sawdust (pine, not cedar) and then put a big handful of straw (not hay, hay is what they eat and straw is bedding) inside and then a couple more handfuls just in her cage outside of the box so she can carry in some more to build her nest if she wants to. They do best if the area around them is calm and quiet and they typically give birth at night. Once she has them you’ll need to pull her out of the cage and put her somewhere safe while you check on the babies. You need to count them and remove any dead kits (baby rabbits). Trust me, it is completely untrue that your scent on them will affect how she takes care of them at all. But it is best not to handle them too much for the first couple weeks, just check on each one once or twice a day. The sawdust and any wet or dirty straw will need to be replaced every 1-2 weeks. And when the babies are about two weeks old they’ll start to open their eyes, if it looks like any of them are having trouble then you have to help them along (they could go permanantly blind if left closed for too long). Just take a warm, wet wash cloth or cotton ball and gently rub their eye lids open. After that if they get crusty and stuck shut again, then just put open them again and put some ointment on their eyes (either one from a feed mill or TSC or neosporin works). They should start leaving their nestbox not too long after this happens and will start nibbling at the mothers feed. A good quality timothy pellet feed from TSC or a feed mill (not a pet store or grocery store brand as you can never tell how long they have been sitting on a shelf or what is in them exactly) with 17% crude protein is best for the duration of her pregnancy and until the babies are weaned. Once the babies start eating they should all be free fed. Then they can be weaned at 6-8 weeks and continue on the 17% protein diet until they are about 6 months old, after that a 15-16% crude protein pellet is best for pet rabbits. Hope this helps and please feel free to contact me with more questions you may have.
